ANYONE WHO believes the police are impartial or that self defence against fascists is extreme should have been with me on Bloody Sunday.
A minibus full of Irish solidarity supporters was attacked by fascists on the way back from the Bloody Sunday march in Coventry. Two coaches going back to Birmingham had already left and had been stopped by police saying that there were fascists ahead. But the police allowed the minibus to go through, not telling them about the fascists.
The mini-bus drove straight into a convoy of fascists - 3 coaches, 4 minibuses and a private ca!.
There were at least 220 fascists. They were not just youth, but included middle aged men. They hurled missiles at the van, stopped it and tried to get in to pull people out and rock it over. All the windows in the van were smashed and people were choking from orange smoke bombs. The NFers were waving union jacks and shouting, Kill, kill the Irish bastards'. The people in the private car were laughing at this.
Where were the police? Happily chatting with Martin Webster, traffic controller extraordinaire, about which route to take back to Birmingham. The police did nothing, in fact they allowed the minibus to be attacked as they knew there was a convoy of vicious fascists cruising around the Midlands and did nothing to stop them. But what's a van load of Irish militants when 13 blacks were burnt to death in London and Asian families are terrorised as a matter of course?
The police even tried to cover up what happened later on when I phoned the local radio to tell them about the attack. They said they couldn't really believe me! I asked why. They said 'Well, we've already had a police report.
