In the present climate self defence is crucial. Black people are being murdered in their homes and on the streets. As socialists we must help, stop this. We in Coventry North East YS got involved in Black Self Defence Squads. There was a formal defence committee, CARDS, helping self defence, providing a link with the community and trying to build support.

A lot of youth were angry both at the passiveness of community leaders and critical of the left that did not involve themselves with defence.

Some Labour Party members and even whole ward contributed - through community defence worked out on a street-by-street basis.

Besides defence there was a cleaning up of racist grafitti and putting up our own.

None of us involved in defence thought this alone was enough. We do realise that racism and fascism will not disappear while unemployment and bad living conditions rise.

We know that such a crisis is not made by black people - or by workers, but the bosses and we seek to smash capitalism. But our self-defence was a response to racist attacks and murders and an expression of the right to protect ourselves.

We do not regard racist attacks and racism as a law and order issue so we do not consider ourselves breaking the law.

Whose law is it anyway? The police are there to make sure that those who make the laws and own all the wealth keep power over those that don't - us, you, the working people.

We retain our slogans against those that ignore the responsibility of defence. time. It wasn't fashionable. But the mods were about at the time, it got lumped together. Dick (Glaze)
