"WE have been thoroughly enjoying ourselves". These were the words of Thatcher's observers to the El Salvador elections. They made out the elections had 'an almost festive character" • The fact that a large number of the alleged 60% of El Salvador's (unknown) total electorate turned out to vote at the point of a gun, seems to have escaped these "observers"

Haig and the US Ambassador to El Salvador have claimed the elecion as proof of "the Si vadorean people's stunning personal committment to the power of a democratic vision" - the poll was "super fantastic"

But for the Salvadoreans, faced with a choice Duarte's Christian Democrats, D'Aubuisson's extreme right or the ultra-right, there was nothing to rejoice about. Their brothers and sisters die at the hands of these thugs every day.

Duarte got 41% of the vote and parties further to the right got 59% so there is a struggle between them over who assumes power. Though Duarte polled less votes, he seems likely to w Reagan wants the re gime to adopt a more re: spectable image so he can carry on pumping US military aid into El Salvador.

Reagan knows he could not even pretend to find any respectability in the psychopath D'Aubuisson.

We must fight to isolate the junta whether it is Duarte's. or D'Aubuisson's and support all Salvadoreans fighting to overthrow it.
