ISRAEL has achieved most of what it set out to do when it invaded the Lebanon. The Palestine Liberation Organisation have been forced to leave Beirut, where they went 34 years ago after being forced out of what is now Israel; and the new Lebanese president is Bashir Gemayel, leader of the virtually fascist Falange, who has been helping the Israelis break the strong links between the PLO and the left-wing Lebanese National Movement.

The methods Israel has used to achieve these ends have horrified even people who normally support its actions. Communities defended only by brave but poorly armed Lebanese and Palestinian militias have faced air and land attacks from the Israeli war machine, one of the best armed in the world.

Phosphorus bombs, which inflict terrible burns, cluster bombs and other barbaric weapons have been ruthlessly used, often against unarmed civilians. The Israelis even at one point during the seige of west Beirut cut off the water supply in an atteffipt The invasion has left about 10,000 dead, 15,00020,000 injured and over 250,000 homeless.

The invasion has shown the sham of the Camp David 'peace plan' sponsored by the USA and signed by Israel and Egypt. This 'peace plan' couldn't stop this obvious attack on peace in the The Arab regimes in the region, who often verbally support the Palestinian cause, were unwilling to do anything practical to help the PLO. Only under pressure from the USA did Syria, Jordan and other states accept the expelled PLO fighters. The Palestinians can't rely on the Arab regimes to solve their problems any more than they can rely on The only hope for peace is when the Palestinians win the right to return to their homeland, a right denied by Israel. The PLO will not stop their fight for this right, despite this latest setback.

The most important thing for us in Britain is to raise support for the just cause of the Palestinians and for the PLO as the organisation leading their Tower DURING the late 50's and early 60's, CND had built itself up as a major popular movement drawing on the support of hundreds of thousands of people. Such support was reflected in marches like the Aldermaston march in 1958.

But by 1963 such events had become smaller and virtually insignificant and CND no longer drew on such mass support.. To explain this sudden decline we must look at events to force a surrender. in the Labour Party at the time.
