marcher bers of CND. As CND March to Blackpool Foot and Stan Orme (who in the 70's presided in secret discussions on the siting of Polaris imperialist-backed 'peace plans' were also active memgrew from strength to strength and the left gained in the Labour fight.
HAMILTON TITUENCY „viatrpr di .......... Party the CND motion was successfully passed at 1960 Scarbourough Labour Party Conference. Angry at this victory and threatened by the left, Gaitskill declared his intention to fight against and reverse the 1960 Conference decision.
He succeeded. In 1961 Labour Party Conference delegates voted down the 1960 Conference decision. Backed by the campaign for democratic socialism, led by Will Rodgers (of latter day SDP fame) Gaitskill used the right wing of the Labour and Trade Union movement to ignore and eventually vote against nuclear disarmament.
Weakness CND's weakness, its failure to link up with the Labour movement and actively defend its unilateralist position, was reflected by the failure of the lefts in the Party to build on the 1960 Conference decision. CND buried itself in single issue purity instead of joining with the rest of the Labour Party.
I think there's an important lesson for us here. Firstly, as members of CND, that we cannot distance ourselves from the labour and trade union movement. In order to defend CND policy we need to become not apolitical bystanders criticising on the outside the Labour Party's betrayals, but to be prepared to defend its policy within the labour movement.
For the left comes the lesson that passing policy is not enough. To maintain it, support needs to be built at grass roots level, in the constituencies and Trade Union branches, by turning the Labour Party out to broad movements such as CND.
As members of the LPYS and YCND we have to realise why is important.
YCND does not see itself as political STOL campaign. It may D tain slogans in? cases more radical the LPY$ (like draw the Fleet!): it nurtures apoliticis YCND stresses importance of chang individual conscioușr not by using and W ing with the lal case for CND. Won to change this in YCN Within the LPYS th is a complacent attit to working in CND, ing i it as. 'petit b geois' or 'full of dents' single campaign that can little effect. ignores the need to b CND and turn it towi the Labour movemen defend the left's gain the Labour Party ovei It also ignores the ef CND has had in can! ing government op tions like Opera Hard Rock and hami ing those like Opera Square Leg, or get Labour Councils become Nuclear f Zones.
