insisted on. its 'leading role in society'. Solidarnoac's ten million membership, compared to. the PUWP's three million, was enough to refute this and the workers claimed another victory.

In November two Solidarnose members were jailed for daring to publish a state plan on how the police should deal with dissenters. Strikes and demonstrations forced the bureaucracy to release them both.

The march had been organised by the Action Committee for a Woman's Right to Work - not by the Labour Party and TUC as we had hoped and campaigned for.

It is clear that some ground has been covered since we started the campaign. Local groups have been set up to take the questions of womens work and unemployment right into their areas and to campaign around local issues. And the Labour Movement has begun to discuss and campaign for a woman's right to an independent income.

What is also clear is that we have a long way to go. After the march and the festival we need a new focus for our campaign. So what should we do now?

On September 18 the Wornen's Campaign for Jobs are holding a mobilising conference at County Hall in London. So far two separate proposals are due to be brought to the conference.

The first is a tribunal. The idea is that women's work and unemployment be put 'on Trial'. • Evidence would be given from each area and 'Judgement passed. Out of this would come demands that the Labour Party and TUC should pledge themselves to.

To me this is covering old ground. The demands have been made. We want action from the Labour Party and TUC, not promises.

The second proposal is to have a Women's 'March for Jobs' This would be a march of Women's Campaign September 18th 11-5 County Hall, London Croche Registration £1 on door Contact Women's Campaign 41, Ellington St., London N7 Rose Chap Brent YS
