That's only if you are heterosexual. If you're a gay man you aren't mature until you're 21 (and then only behind locked doors). Lesbians presumably never mature because there is no consent age for them (Oh, sorry, 1 forgot, there aren't any. They don't exist.).
I think the age of consent Dear Comrades, I was really impressed. by Class Fighter at the YS Summer camp. We were the only organised opposition and the positions we took on such things as Ireland, women, gays and racism were much stronger and more positive than those of the leadership. The leadership felt the strength (?) of their promeeting is just another way to restrict the lives of young people. It's an insult to young women that the law under the guise 'of protecting young women' can more or less say they can't decide for themselves. What judge or policeman can decide for you?
Contraceptives
If you are under 16 and want to use contraceptives (which I think would show a pretty mature attitude), it's difficult to get them.
A girl in my year at year at 15 got she was scared to get any contraceptives. Also because she was scared to tell anyone, she left it too late to get an abortion (assuming she would have been allowed to have one by the male doctors). She had to go through with the pregnancy and in the end had her child adopted. That is the kind of tragedy and misery the age of consent can bring.
People say you've got to have an age of consent because it will encourage young women to sleep with whoever they want to land however many).
Babysitting
Sex for young people is hard enough as they hever have anywhere to do it, except over the fields, in the back of cars, babysitting, etc., (remembering?). So why make it harder for them by adding the risk of pregnancy?
On the age of consent for gay men... it's blatant discrimination. It says gays are abnormal and that young men may be corrupted. Heterosexual sex isn't seen as corrupt and neither should gay and lesbian sex be seen as corrupt either.
We should support all lowerings of the age of consent, but with the eventual aim of abolishing it altogether.
