32 striking toolmakers at Leyland's SU Carburettor plant voted on Monday to stay out on strike.
Referring to bitterness at the earlier threats by the Executive to expel them from the union, the toolmakers decided they would stay out until they were convinced that the EC would officially take up their demand for pay parity with Rover toolmakers.
This decision reflects the confidence of the SU men that. their stand and the solid support they have rec eived from Leyland's unoffici al toolroom Duffy committee has inflicted a substantial defeat on the AUEW But there is no this they are any nearer to actually achieving the £7 per week increase necessary to equal the Rover rate-let alone winning this demand for the other 3,000 toolmakers adhering to the toolroom committee.
Meanwhile toolroom leader Roy Fraser still shows no sign of submitting a pay claim for his skilled and unskilled members in Leyland's Cowley Body Plant, despite the clear lead from the TGWU membership in the Body Plant or in the nearby Assembly Plant, both of which have lodged £27 pay claims.
SU leader Regan has even declared support for the 5% pay limit!
Toolmakers must now take the opportunity to spearhead plant. level pay demands throughout Leyland, combining their current objectives with formulating claims for the November 1 pay review, and linking up with the wages movement now developing throughout the working class.
