A large international campaign has helped to secure the release of some of the socialists imprisoned in August by the Brazilian dictatorship.

On September 18 the two arrested leaders of the Argentinian Socialist Workers* Party (PST), Nahuel Moreno and Rita Strasberg, were released and deported to Colombia.

A few days earlier the Portuguese PRT leader Antonio Sa Leal and some of the arrested Brazilian members of the Socialist Convergence group had been set free.

Among those who supported the demand for the freedom of these socialists were the Spanish Socialist and Communist Parties, the Portuguese Socialist and Communist Parties, the French Socialist Party and the CP-dominated trade union federation, the CGT.

Many other trade union and political leaders signed the petition.

In Britain it was signed by among others, Labour MP Dennis Skinner and exdeputy General Secretary of the AUEW, Ernie Roberts.

A picket took place outside the Brazilian embassy in London on September 18 at which a demand for the release of the prisoners was handed to a representative of the Brazilian regime.

According to latest reports, eight members of Socialist Convergence are still jailed. The campaign for their release must continue.

No socialist or militant worker in Brazil, however, will be safe until the Geisel dictatorship is overthrown.

Freedom for the socialist prisoners in Brazil!

Down with the dictatorship!
