VERAL AGAINS' Madrid at the hands of General Franco's regime were freed last week.

Their release followed a general istrike in the shipyards of El Ferrol in Galicia, in which most of the accused were workers.

The government reacted immediately to the strike by declaring a state of emergency in the town, but protest stoppages and workingto-rule continued in the shipyards.

However, 18 of the 23 stayed on trial on various charges, some of which were changed to more serious indictments, including "terrorism' as the proceedings opened in the Madrid public order court.

3 Year Wait All the accused had been awaiting trial for more than 3 years. They were arrested in March 1972, when police attacked a demonstration of over 4,000 in El Ferrol, marching in support of claims on wages and conditions in the shipyards. Several of those still awaiting sentences in the courts are accused of illegal membership of the Spanish Communist Party.

The fascist regime suffered a significant setback in the elections to the 'Syndicates', (state-controlled "trade unions"), whose results were announced last week.

Despite the fact that there was a split between the Stalinists and the Social Democrats, with the illegal Social Democratic trade unior organisation (UGT) calling for a boycott, while the CP ran candidates unofficially, the outcome was a rebuff to the authorities. In a low poll, less than a quatter of the posts were kept by those who formerly held them, and in key plants, such as the SEAT car factory in Barcelona, the votes went solidly behind the representatives of the illegal 'workers commissions'.
