The nature of the T&GWU conference has to be taken into account when assessing the votes or the impact of policies.
The conferences of the big general unions are in some ways different from industrial unions which deal specifically with the wages and conditions of an In the AUEW for example Executive Committee and National Committee members can take opposing positions and lead sections of the conference. This could not happen at a T&GWU conference.
There Jones speaks for the Executive Committee (who are not allowed to attend) or he delegates a national officer to speak on his behalf. This means that oppositior can only come from individual delegates who are branded as being against the whole leadership.
The conference is therefore more weighted in favour of the platform than is the case in most trade unto. ::0:=:e:25.
