The long-running struggle to make Labour MPs accountable to the constituency parties that put them in office was sabotaged by Hugh Scanlon on Tuesday.
He defied his union mandate and witheld the AUEW block vote in the crucial vote-and claimed afterwards that he had made a 'mistake' IT IS UNACCEPTABLE to see the National Front protected by phalanxes of police when they march through the streets, declared Renee Short on behalf of the NEC.
Winding up the debate on race relations, she went on:
"Neither is it acceptable that the police should be infiltrated by fascist sympathisers."
Though she also called for Home Secretary Rees to take up complaints against the police, she went on to sucessfully urge the conference to reject a motlion which recognised the right of immigrant communities to organise their own self-defence at times of racist violence and police harassment.
The defeated motion had also correctly condemned all Immigration Acts and the Select Committee Report on Immigration in which Labour MPs had co-signed a series of vicious racist policies.
