The bankruptcy of leadership at Speke was clear.

ASTMS convenor Fred Christopher spinelessiy argued against any actionsuch as "strikes"-which might be "provocative" while AUEW convenor Arthur Todd suggested that new investment be diverted from Fort Dunlop in Birmingham to the Speke/ plant.

TGWU convenor Charlie Parker echoed management's propaganda, calling for import controls against! cheap East European tyres.i But nobody put foward the essential policy if workers are to prevent plant and goods from being removed: only a full-scale factory occupation can do this, and offer any serious prospect of saving the 2,400 threatened jobs at Dunlops.
