I DONT NEED TO TELL YOU THAT THINGS ARE LOOKING BLEAK.

The September issue of TGWU Record contains an interesting back page story of a pay deal linked to a cost-of-living clause won by 120 Coventry foundry workers after a four-week strike.

The basic increase of 12% is tied to an agreement to pay a 60p supplement for every 1% increase in the Retail Price Index.

Should inflation actually fall (!) the supplement will remain unchanged. : Though this deal falls short DON'T WHINE ON ABOUT YOUR BLASTED CUTS RALLY! IVE GOT AN IMPORTANT... ER ..MEETING TONIGHT... IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH! _WITHOUT YOUR BLOCK VOTES, IMA DEAD DUCK-AND YOU'LL BE NEXT!. of: complete cost-of-living protection-the supplements do not allow for the erfects of taxation, and the government's Retail Price Index figures do not sufficiently accurately reflect the impact of rising rents, rates, prices and travel costs on workers' pay packets-it is important as evidence that growing numbers of workers recognise the need to protect pay settlements against inflation.

Were the deal Jinked to a price index compiled by trade unionists and housewives it would offer much better hopes of preserving living standards.

The TGWU journal, conveniently forgetting the attack on this policy by Moss Evans at this year's TGWU conference and the manoeuvres that eventually brought its defeat by a mere 89 votes, comments: "If this is so, let us hope it is the first of many to help overcome a threatened inflationary winter."
