Following the agreement to 5,000 sackings at Port Talbot, leaders of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation have agreed to the axing of 3,600 jobs at the British Steel Corporation's Llanwern works.

The latest cutback will slash the workforce to just over 4,800 and cut production in half.

This squalid deal is part of a package of similar redundacy schemes being negotiated by ISTC leaders in the breathing space created by the postponement of their union conference.

When the delegates eventually meet, they will be pre enl with tens of thousands o Sa: ings in South Wales, tl coast and Scotland all as fait accompli.

Echo

In words that echo those of every union bureaucrat ducking a fight to save jobs in the recent period, ISTC official Keith Brookman said:

"We have agreed because we feel it is in the best long-term interests of Llanwern and its survival. We see no alternative in the face of tremendous pressure by the Corporation to implement their proposals". -shop tactics of BSC's new "transfer" from the USA, Mr Ian MacGregor.

Ostentatiously touring South Wales, one of his first projected disaster areas—MacGregor's first public pronouncements in Britain were directed towards speeding up the sackings programme!

The anguished squeals of protest that this blunt statement drew from ISTC leader Bill Sirs have now been exposed as squeals of embarassmentMacGregor was speaking out before the Llanwern deal was signed and sealed!
