Now since the strike wave erupted bureaucrats like David Basnett of the GMWU are justifying the visit by saying they will speak to "both sides".

Yet they will clearly be seen as the guests of the bureaucracy and will be used by them to persuade workers to accept reasonable' compromises.

There is only one way to show solidarity with the Polish strikers-break off the visit. An invitation from the Gdansk shipyard workers would be a different matter and one which the TUC would certainly not accept in defiance of the puppet unions in Poland.

So far the running against the visit has been made by fanatical anti-communists like Frank Chappell.

Silent

The lefts have been silent. Yet the NUJ executive has called on the TUC to break off the visit and send instead a message of solidarity to the Polish working class. A resolution to demand this from the TUC was passed at the NUJ executive on August 22/23.

The TUC must go further. It should invite the MKS (United Strike Committee) to send a representative to the TUC and cancel the invitation to the Polish bureaucracy.

Demagogy

An MKS delegate could place before the TUC its demands on blacking or supplies.

The Longshoremen's blacking of Polish ships in the United States is by no means free from anti-communist demagogy on the part of its leadership.

A sharp line must be drawn betwen support for the Polish workers and support for imperialism.

Before blacking is imposed the workers must be clear it is at the behest of the Polish strikers.
