Lambeth council leader Ted Knight, who has insisted on the need to defend services through rate increases, is now calling for a cut of £11 million in his 1981-2 budget proposals.
This represents a 10% cut on the council's budget-and runs alongside a two-stage £4 per week increase in council house rents and a 37½% increase in domestic rates.
But Knight the axe should fall in such a way as to avoid redundancies and protect existing jobs.
In doing so he is plainly trying to straddle the fence between Lambeth local government unions-who have supported his policy of rate increases-and Lambeth ratepayers.
But it is unlikely that the proposed budget will satisfy either working class tenants in Lambeth or the reactionary ratepayers movement.
