In Glasgow, Springburn Committee Against the Cuts is organising a public meeting on Monday 23 March in Barmulloch Community Centre at 7.30 pm. to highlight the impact of cuts on the local area, especially as they affect education.

The Committee has released a campaign leaflet along with a petition calling upon Strathclyde Regional Council "immediately state their willingness to negotiate smaller class sizes at this time of falling school rolls".

The Scottish Education Department want to put class sizes up from 33 to 35 and to get rid of 15,000 teachers in Scotland in the 1980s. The sole purpose of these actions is to cut the money going to education whatever the deterioration in standards this will mean.

Already 'dozens of teachers in Glasgow, including many in the Springburn area, have been told they are "surplus to requirements" and will be shifted elsewhere.

Education is not the only social service under attack. by the Tory government. Council house rents in Springburn will increase by 31% in March of this year. Bus services are being cut and fares increased.

Speakers at the 23 March meeting will include representatives of the Regional Council, the ' teachers" union and the Scottish Tenants Organisation.

A. mass meeting of 400 tenants in Walsall last week voted to withhold the £3.25 per week rent increase imposed by the Labour council. The meeting was curiously supported by council leader Brian Powell, who said that the coun cillors were behind the action, despite having voted for the increase.
