The seven week old strike at Pergamon Press Oxford, where 9 NUJ members have been sacked for withdrawing their labour in pursuit of a claim covering wages, hours and other conditions of employment, continues in the face of employer Robert Maxwell's seeming determination to remove the NUJ from Pergamon.

What aliows Maxwell to sue this end with such arent intransigence lains the acquiescence of local and national trade union and Labour Party leadership, manifesting itself now in the response of Labour Party agent, Bryan Keen, to the Oxford CLP decision to back the strike.

Answering enquiries from the local press, Keen said that Maxwell-a General Committee member of the Oxford CLP- "wasn't accountable" to the Labour Party for "what he does at Pergamon" and added that in his opinion the Labour Party shouldn't get involved.

Mr Keen also revealed that he was not neutral on the issue-Maxwell helped him buy his house!

response to this Labour Partv members must InsIst that Maxweii cannot attack union rights with impunity and that this is a dispute in which the Labour Party is already implicated.

The resolution of support carried at the last GC of Oxford CLP called on all Labour Party members to do all they could to secure the reinstatement of the sacked nine.

Keen's statements to the press fly in the face of that decision.

Someone should perhaps draw this to his attention the next time Oxford CLP discusses the "threat to democracy" posed by Socialist Press readers!

Meanwhile as Labour right wingers continue to shield Maxwell, backing has been : orthcoming from elsewhe e in the labour movement.

Civil servants in the library service, asked to consider possible blacking action, have in some cases already begun to implement a ban on ordering Pergamon publications.

Solidarity continues to grow within the NUJ itself. But from the print unionswho hold the key to life or death for trade unionism in Pergamon-there remains only a stubborn refusal to implement the blacking action that could bring Maxwell to his knees.

Financial support is needed by the strikers, and messages of support from Labour Parties and trade union bodies-particularly in the print and publishing field -should be sent to the Strike Committee, c/o S, Union Street, Oxford. Rates Trial sub (UK).
