The decision last week by union officials repres enting one million council workers to seek more talks on their pay claim is a conscious move tor sabotage the firemen's pay strike, and to preserve the 10% pay guidelines.
Last Monday NUPE announced that, while doing nothing to mobilise their own members alongside the firemen, they would, to preserve their 'left' image among NUPE workers, donate £10.000 of conscience money the FBU.
This gesture has now been aped by a donation of £1,000 from the ASLEF leadership headed by fast-talking, slow acting Ray Buckton. Buckton too has repeatedly denounced the 10% pay limit-but has made no moves to challenge it in practice.
The return to talks on the council workers' review comes despite the tact that their 30% pay claim has been met by an employers' offer of only 10%.
The second round of 'talks' on this offer can only result in a further deadlock or in an inglorious sell-out by NUPE leaders without so much as a struggle-even atter 17 out of the union's 18 regions rejected the 10% offer.
Meanwhile NUPE leader Fisher has joined GMWU leader Basnett in calling for a long term plan for public service pay that would put an end to free collective bargaining.
Local authority manual workers in NUPE and other unions must fight through their branches and stewards' committees to reverse this position and to demand immediate strike action for the full claim.
