The NUJ members hav now been left completel isolated in their 30 wee strike for a closed shop.

London office journalistswho supported the strike fc seven months-were drive back to work before Chris mas after it became clear tha escalation before Christma was not on the cards.

When London office mer bers returned to work Wes minister Press with the customary viciousne imposed a series of humilia ing demands.

These included the liftir of blacking by all papers: the group, a condition signe by NUJ General Secretal Ken Ashton, without tt knowledge, let alone agre ment of the membership.

Offices at Swindo: Oxford and Uxbridge wel then presented with the doc ment by their managemen and told that if they did ne lift their blacking Londc office members would lo: pension, rights, holiday pa for 1977 and continuity ‹ employment.

The only way torward: for the Darlington chapel t make a clear call for escal tion and be prepared t tackle head on the burear cracies that have left them s isolated.

This will require a fundi mental change in approach b the Darlington leadershi itself to become prepared t confront opposition instea of capitulating to it.
