The development of support for the firemen's struggle beyond mere words was shown by the setting up on 3 January of a Council of Action in This followed discussions within the Trades Council, local Labour Parties and the FBU in the area, all of which centred on co-ordinated and real action in support of the strike.

Meeting

A letter from the Kentish Town FBU sent to the Trades Council during December urged the setting up of a Council of Action and Camden Labour Party Secretary John Braggins, as the result of discussion in the North Party GMC, wrote to the Trades Council Secretary R. Dunnett urging joint action.

The result was a meeting held on 3 January between the Trades Council Executive representatives of the four Camden FBU branches and the Labour Party.

The Council of Action have now published a leaflet calling for support for a demonstration on Tuesday 10 January, and in general terms for industrial action.

What is necessary now is for a further development of this policy directed at those union leaders and 'left' MPs who have expressed support.

Other groups of workers in Camden can now be approached, notably the large number of NUPE members in the area to take part in joint action to defeat the 10%.

This struggle will go on whatever the outcome of the Firemen's Recall Conterence.
